Distance matters when you receive a cancer diagnosis and when living rurally, the kilometres can add up.
“Without the support of Can Assist many of our patients would either delay or forfeit treatment altogether” Cancer Nurse, Dubbo Health Service.
Whilst the NSW Government has a subsidy scheme for travelling distances greater than 100km for specialized health treatment that is not available locally, not everyone meets the requirements therefore falling short of this safety net. Additionally, community or public transport can be limited and costly in the country.
That is where Can Assist steps in, we support no matter what the distance. Funds raised will empower our network to support country patients who do not qualify for the NSW Government’s subsidy scheme and be used to directly assist with transport related expenses to treatment such as taxi fares or petrol vouchers. Whatever it takes to ensure that every country cancer patient’s travel is undertaken to get the medical support needed. Can Assist will GO the Distance.
Distance matters. Compared to those in metropolitan areas, country cancer patients are diagnosed later, are more likely to die and seventeen times more likely to report geographical and financial barriers to care.
This is why we need your support – let’s STRYDE4 getting country cancer patients to their treatment, no matter the distance. Assist us so we can say “yes, we Can Assist''!

The money you raise from taking part in STRYDE4 Corporate Challenge will directly help Cure Cancer fund:
Dr. Ben Wylie and his team have developed a biodegradable gel that delivers mRNA-based immunotherapy drugs directly to the surgical site during sarcoma removal, aiming to prevent cancer recurrence. This innovative gel activates the immune system to target remaining cancer cells, offering a promising solution to reduce the need for intense follow-up treatments and improve outcomes for paediatric sarcoma patients.

We get it. Life is full of possibilities when cancer crashes into a young person’s world and shatters everything. Cancer pushes them back into the nest, makes them grow up too fast and weighs them down with worries they’re not supposed to have yet. Canteen is the game-changer. We help young people cope with cancer in their families. Through Canteen, they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer, connect with other young people in the same boat and if they’ve been diagnosed themselves, we also provide specialist, youth-specific treatment teams.

Women’s Community Shelters (WCS) addresses the critical shortage of crisis accommodation for women experiencing homelessness. Every night, over half of the women seeking shelter are turned away due to a lack of space. WCS works with communities to establish new shelters that offer safe, short-term accommodation and essential support services, such as counselling, healthcare, legal aid, and assistance with education and employment. These services empower women to rebuild their lives and regain control.
Through an innovative tri-partite funding model, WCS brings together government, philanthropy/business, and local communities to fund and operate shelters. We also provide expert support in governance, intellectual property, and project management to ensure shelters run efficiently and deliver positive outcomes for women. With a dedicated team, WCS ensures each shelter achieves best practices while maintaining cost efficiency and long-term impact.
